Sunney Chan turns 80 on October 5th this year. To help Sunney celebrate this milestone occasion, the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University and the Institute of Chemistry at Academia Sinica have organized a birthday symposium in his honor on October 7—8, 2016. The theme of the symposium is “Membrane proteins: Biochemistry, diseases, and energy”, an area of science that has occupied much of Sunney’s attention the past several decades. To highlight Sunney’s scientific impact, we have invited a number of his former students, postdocs, and collaborators to Taiwan to enlighten us on this significant area of biochemistry and biophysics. We invite you to participate in this symposium. Since his move from Caltech to Taiwan some 18 years ago, Sunney has touched all of us in many ways: his academic and scientific leadership, his philosophy on education and science, his wisdom and friendships, his support of students and young scientists, and his knowledge of cuisine and wine!
